Unit Marked PRUSSIAN Antique CAVALRY M 1823 Pistol

Made at the armory at Suhl

Here we present an antique Prussian Cavalry Model 1823 Pistol, made circa the 1820s by the armory at Suhl. This pistol began life as a flintlock in the 1820s and was updated to percussion around the 1850s to continue service, perhaps even as late as the 1870s. These large-bore, single-shot cavalry pistols remained virtually unchanged until after the Franco-Prussian War, when Prussian horse troops would finally adopt the revolver. This pistol may very well have seen the Schleswig Wars, Austro-Prussian War, and Franco-Prussian War before its retirement.

This pistol features a full-length stock with a barrel band on the very end. The lock was armory converted from flintlock to percussion and features a very neat safety that covered the nipple and allowed the hammer to be carried in half-cock. There are many distinct markings, including two unit markings on this pistol. The lock is marked “SUHL”. The first unit marking on the brass pommel cap is “T.9./67” and the second on the trigger guard is “2 L R 1 6”. “CROWN/K” acceptance marks can be found all over the gun. “9” is marked on top of the barrel. The left side of the barrel is marked “CROWN/FW” and “GS” which are view and proof marks. There are 3 sets of repeating numbers: “572”, “42”, and “26”. These are assembly numbers from the original manufacture of this piece, as well as from various trips to the armory, such as when the percussion conversion was performed.

The overall condition is very good. The metal is dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good condition with a few stable cracks from use and tightening the lock screws on the left side of the gun. The bore is smooth and dark. The action on this pistol is excellent. Here is a very scarce example of a Prussian Dragoon Pistol!
