Description:
Very Nice Drake Alteration U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Percussion Rifle by Robbins & Lawrence Dated 1850. In .54 caliber with 33” round barrel stamped “1850” on rear tang with US/J.P.C./P stamped at left side of breech. Lockplate marked, “ROBBINS/&/LAWRENCE/U.S.”, forward of hammer with “WINDSOR VT/1850” rear of hammer. The full length walnut stock is fitted with brass furniture including brass patchbox. The Brass buttplate has partially visible Massachusetts Infantry marking on face with, “US” on tang along with a rack number, “27/I”. Two visible government cartouches marked on left flat opposite hammer. Small inspector marks also visible on sideplate, left barrel flat, buttplate & triggerguard tang. Complete with original iron ramrod with brass tip. This rifle is one of 15,000 produced by Robbins & Lawrence under Government Contract from 1848 to 1853 in Windsor, Vermont. In 1862 the State of Massachusetts contracted with A.J. Drake & Co. to alter 1,839 Robbins & Lawrence rifles to long range models with a long range leaf rear sight, new front sight & a long angular socket bayonet. It appears that nearly all “Drake” altered M1841 rifles were issued to the 46th & 51st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Very good condition overall with metal surfaces showing a gray patina with some light pitting showing on hammer & nipple. Brass surfaces are bright showing old cleaning with some light pitting scattered on the buttplate. The walnut stock remains in very good condition showing typical scattered use marks throughout. Mechanically sound with good bore. Overall, a nice veteran Model 1841 “Mississippi Rifle” that would make a nice addition to any collection.
