Charles Daly (Original Merkel ofn German Mfg.) Pre-War WW II 12 Ga., 30" Barrels, LOP 14 1/2", 2 3/4"chambers Choked Full/Full. Ser 1594.
This is a beautiful example of early German Daly quality and craftsmanship. The gun appears to have retained about 90% of the original blue. With loss restricted to sharp edge silvering. There are no rust spots pin pricks or rub marks. The left barrel has very tiny surface dent about two inches from the muzzle.
The frame and screw heads are all nicely " bank note" engraved. The borders are scroll engraved. The receiver has double cocking indicators and automatic ejectors as is usually found on custom doubles. Even the screw slots are all lined up horizontally a sure sign that the gun was a very superior model.
There is a beautiful checkered rib between the barrels that is engraved Charles Daly Krupp Fluid Steel Barrels.
The walnut stock and forearm are nicely hand checkered and do shown some softness from handling. There are no splits or dings, however there is a tiny chip out of the toe. The butt stock does have a sterling silver monogram plaque that has not been engraved.
A new recoil pad has been professionally installed as the one that was on the gun collapsed from closet store over the last 60 or 70 years.
The forearm take down lever is also engraved in a style consistent with the rest of the gun. A large horn tip end the forearm and is slightly checkered to match .I have been told that this gunis probably one of only 2500 gun made for Charles Daly by the famous German gun maker MerkelI. I wonder what a beauty with the quality and features of this double would cost in today's market. A real prize for your collection and super for the field. .........$1795
