Description:

SCARCE Antique LOWELL “Made for Smith & Wesson”

1 of 5,000 Made Circa 1864

Here we present an antique Lowell Arms Co. Pocket Revolver, made circa 1864 in Lowell, Massachusetts for Smith & Wesson. When Smith & Wesson was unable to keep up with Civil War-era demands for their revolvers, Rollin White (the inventor and owner of the patent that S&W used to make their cartridge revolvers) formed a company called Rollin White Arms in 1861 to manufacture these seven-shot, single-action revolvers. They were marketed exclusively by Smith & Wesson through their own retailers. They were very closely modeled after the S&W flagship Model No. 1 Second Issue but featured a solid frame instead of having the hinged barrel assembly. White left the company in 1864, so the name was changed to Lowell Arms Co. Approximately 5,000 Pocket Revolvers were produced under the Rollin White name and 5,000 more by Lowell Arms.

This revolver bears the particularly desirable markings “Made for Smith & Wesson by Lowell Arms Co. Lowell Mass.” Some of the production did not bear the “Made for Smith & Wesson by” portion. The right side of the frame is marked with “PAT. APRIL 1867”. The revolver features a very attractive brass frame, and also comes equipped with a loading gate and a mobile ejector rod on the right side, features that the S&W did not have. It may have been overkill on this tiny revolver, but it makes it a very neat bit of Smith & Wesson history!

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have a mild patina. The markings are clear and legible. The numbers match, including the grips. The bore has sharp rifling and clean, bright surfaces. The rosewood grips are very good and are numbered to the gun. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a fantastic and very collectible little revolver “Made for Smith & Wesson”!

Barrel is 3 inches.
