Description:
The AR-7 was developed from the AR-5 bolt action rifle, which had been designed as an aircrew survival rifle to replace the Air Force’s M4 Survival Rifle and M6 Aircrew Survival Weapon. Although the AR-5 ultimately was not issued (it was adopted but did not replace the M4 and M6), ArmaLite used the experience and the design to create the AR-7 semi-auto rifle. While the AR-7’s takedown was not a new concept, being able to store the rifle’s components inside the buttstock was very much so a new feature. At the time, this was very unusual, but effective. The rifle’s barrel, receiver, and 8-round magazine could all be stored inside the stock. To make it possible to store the receiver in the stock, the charging handle was built to retract into the receiver. To charge the bolt, the charging handle is simply pulled out, and then pulled back in similar fashion to other semi-auto rifles. The AR-7 shown here is an original ArmaLite product, rather than one of the later Charter Arms or current Henry rifles. It is in great shape. The stock shows no cracks, and the charging handle is easy to operate. It comes with the original, 8-round magazine plus a Ram-Line plastic 25-round magazine. The latter of course will not fit in the stock but would be useful for plinking or practice. The AR-7 is highly recommended for use by outdoor users of recreational vehicles (automobile, airplane or boat) who might have need for a weapon for foraging or defense in a wilderness emergency.
