Description:
What we have here is a beautiful, near mint Auto 5 Lightweight Model in 12-gauge. The Auto 5 was the first commercially successful semi-automatic shotgun, designed by the famous John M. Browning in 1898. Originally, he took the design to Winchester, whom he had previously sold his designs to. When they refused his terms, he took the design to Remington, but the then president of Remington passed away, forcing Browning to take the gun to FN in Belgium. Eventually, the Auto 5 was built under license by Remington as the Model 11. Browning considered the Auto 5 his best design, and it was produced continuously for nearly one hundred years. The Lightweight model was designed to allow shooters to be able to take their Auto 5 on longer, foot-bound journeys than what was considered advisable with a standard Auto 5. It also allowed the user to traverse the gun faster when tracking airborne targets. I should mention, before we move forward, that for this Lightweight, there are two barrels. The first barrel is a Belgian, fixed-choke skeet barrel (indicated on the barrel by the symbol **$). The second barrel is a later Miroku-made barrel with removable Invector Plus chokes of which there are three. The gun, in its original form was produced at an interesting point in time, during which FN’s serial number system was altered. From 1958 till early 1968, Browning Auto-5’s used the last digit of the year, a letter code indicating the model, and the remaining digits in the serial number. For example, 6G61293 would stand for a 1966, light weight 12-gauge (represented by the letter “G”). Unfortunately, the number “8” would be a repeated for 1958 and 1968 causing some confusion, and so in that year, FN began using the last two digits in the year. Late-manufacture 1968 Auto-5s have a 68 in front of the letter. Later on a Miroku-manufactured Auto-5 Invector-Plus barrel was added. This allows the Auto-5 to be used for a multitude of tasks without having to swap barrels. A simple change of screw-in chokes is all it takes to alter the gun’s sporting type. The A-5 currently sports the Miroku barrel and it is fitted with a choke marked by four notches, indicating that it should be used as either a skeet choke with lead or a modified choke with steel. The Light 12 is in good condition. The engraving is quite exquisite. The receiver does exhibit bluing loss and the wooden furniture is dinged in some spots. It’s obvious that the shotgun has been taken on a bird hunt or two. A rubber butt pad has been added for recoil reduction. The bores of both barrels however are in excellent condition and the Miroku barrel possesses a pristine level of bluing. The Belgian skeet barrel exhibits some bluing loss. There a no signs of rust or pitting anywhere on the gun. or the barrels. The wood shows no signs of cracking. The magazine has a plug in the magazine tube for bird hunting, reducing total capacity to 3. Removed, a total of 5 rounds can be loaded. Due to the limited number of pictures allowed, I have focused mainly on the A-5 with the Miroku barrel rather than the spare barrel and choke tubes. I have included a picture of the spare choke tube containers and the Belgian barrel's skeet markings for for identification purposes. This shotgun can be used for all kinds of sport-shooting. Do not pass up the opportunity to own one of the finest semi-auto shotguns ever made. (NOTICE: This shotgun is on consignment. Since the first posting of this firearm, the original owner has brought in a spare barrel and choke tubes. As such I have updated the original description and some of the pictures to reflect this.)
