Description:

ENGRAVED & CARVED Antique MARIETTE Flobert Shotgun

Swiss Marked Gun w European Marked Traveling Case

Here we present an antique Mariette Brevete Warnant Action Flobert Shotgun, made in Liege, Belgium circa the late 19th Century. This would have been made for pest control around the homestead, light small-game hunting, and even target practice. It was made to chamber the 9mm Flobert shotshell, which anyone would be able to handle. It is highly ornate with extensive engraving and carved stock. The curling trigger guard is the perfect finishing touch on this stately little gun.

This shotgun features a fully octagonal, smooth-bored barrel. The front sight is a post with a swollen bead on top with a notched rear sight. It is equipped with sling swivels. The right side of the barrel is marked “G. MARIETTE BREVETE”.  The top flat of the barrel is marked “A WISPI A BERNE”, the firm in Berne, Switzerland that imported and retailed the firearm. The barrel also carries Liege proof marks. This little shotgun comes with a “IMBERT A MARSEILLE” retailer marked traveling case that is not original to the gun, though it makes for a great display. The exterior is affixed with a brass placard that still shows faintly “Mr Piagnet” with some other markings that are not quite legible. The construction is wood and canvas type material with brass hardware. The interior is lined with red velvet bearing the retailer mark above. Two tags remain on the exterior, one for France and one for Genève. When this gun is dismounted the stock fits inside the appropriate compartment, but the barrel does not, due to the dimension of the hammer and trigger assembly.

The overall condition is near fine. The original blue finish is about 60%. Case colors are still present on the breech block. The markings are legible. The engravings are clear. The carved stock is in good condition with some old handling marks. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is excellent. Here is a sweet little shotgun made in Belgium, sold in Switzerland!
