Shipping is actual cost with a minimum of $30.00 for pistols and $50.00 for rifles/shotguns to ship to most of the 48 contiguous states. Shipping to Alaska may require an extra fee. Next to the Mauser Model 1898, the Model of 1896 is one of the most well-known Mauser Models. Designed and ordered for Sweden, the Model of 1896 was based on previous Mauser models, but incorporating improvements suggested by the Swedish. All Swedish Mausers, whether built in Sweden by Carl Gustaf or at the Mauser factory in Oberndorf, Germany, were fabricated using Swedish-supplied vanadium, nickel, and copper. The rifles are known for both their strength and their resistance to corrosion. All are chambered for the excellent 6.5x55 Swedish round. Each rifle was test proofed with this round loaded to 66,000 psi (c. 55,000 CUP), proving the rifle’s design is indeed strong. The Model of 1896 features a cock-on-closing action as in earlier Mauser models and the British Lee-Enfield rifle. As the original rifles were 50 inches in over-all length, this one, as in other sporterized examples, has been shortened to a more manageable length. The barrel has been shortened from the original 29.1 inches to 24 inches, and the muzzle has a recessed crown. A new, synthetic stock has been fitted, giving the rifle an OAL of 45 inches. This allows the rifle to be carried over long distances more easily. In addition, synthetic stocks are more resistant to moisture, heat, and cold than wood stocks. The receiver has been drilled and tapped for scope mounts, and currently it sports Weaver bases and Leupold scope rings. The front and rear Weavers are the models 46 and 55 respectively. The rear scope base and ring have been milled down to allow the bolt to operate. The 6.5 Swed is one of the few European cartridges to gain a foothold in the United States, and today enjoys a large following. It has become extremely popular for deer hunting and is also at home in target shooting competitions. Many of the American and European ammo manufacturers produce 6.5 Swedish ammunition. Overall, this rifle, with the right scope, would make an excellent deer or target rifle.
