Here we present a Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Ideal No. 44 Rifle, made around the turn of the 20th Century in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. This rifle is numbered very early, but cannot be dated since the Stevens factory records were burned in their entirety. Production began in 1894 and went on through the early 20th Century. This rifle is chambered in .38-55, a very effective medium bore cartridge with minimal recoil. This rifle was manufactured right around the time that Stevens Arms & Tool Company was becoming the largest producer of sporting firearms in the world. By 1915, Stevens was a leader in the American arms business as a maker of target and small game hunting guns. This specimen is in great condition with vibrant case colors and would have been a fantastic hunting rifle. The barrel is a No. 2 weight, half-octagonal, half-round. The front sight has two available pictures: one is a small post, while the other is a fine bead inside a hood. The rear sight is an adjustable buckhorn. This rifle is also equipped with a tang sight for those ultra-precise long shots. The top of the barrel is marked “J. STEVENS A&T CO./CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS U.S.A PA’DAPR 17.94”. The left side of the barrel is marked “38.55” for the cartridge it chambers. The overall condition is very fine. The original blue finish is 60%. The original case colors are about 75%. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is very fine. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is strong. This rifle’s Achilles heel is one shared by many a No. 44. The link pins have stretched, so that the breech block falls when the hammer is cocked. Overall, this is a gorgeous example that just needs a little mechanical attention. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 26 inches. Caliber: .38-55 WCF Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING. Will need to be sent to your local FFL or C&R licensee. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
