Description:

This is a G. McMillan & Co. "Talon" Sporter bolt action rifle chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum.  I am the original owner, a hunter & not an FFL dealer, who ordered this semi-custom rifle for my personal use in March of 1991. That was the first year of production for the proprietary Talon action, and this was one of the first Talon actioned rifles built, with serial #00026.

According to the literature of the day, the Talon rifle was specifically designed for hunting dangerous game by combining the best features of the Mauser Model 98 with those of the Pre-64 Winchester Model 70.

Standard features include: 4340 chrome-molybdenum action with controlled round feeding; Mauser style claw extractor; fixed ejector for positive ejection; cone breech insuring positive feeding; match grade chamber; Winchester style three position safety; swept back style bolt handle; hand molded, aluminum pillar bedded McMillan Classic fiberglass stock with cheekpiece and Pachmayer Decelerator recoil pad. The LOP is 13 5/8".  The Shilen trigger breaks crisp with no creep or overtravel, and is factory set at 2.5 pounds.  McMillan Weaver style steel bases ($45) and Burris Zee rings ($40) were standard issue for G. McMillan & Co. - See note below concerning rings.

Additional factory installed options include:  24" x .675" match grade, button cut, hand lapped and polished, 17-4 stainless steel, free floated, Heavy Sporter contour McMillan rifle barrel, which is custom matched to the receiver, threaded for a muzzle brake ($165), & includes a stainless steel thread protector cap ($40); a locking, hinged steel floor plate ($50).  All metal parts are protected with an upgraded Robar Industries NP3 finish ($270). The prices in parenthesis are either the 1992 cost for NP3 finishing of the part, or the 1992 cost of the factory extra option.  NP3 finishing costs significantly more today.

The approximate weight is 7 3/4 lbs. unloaded, without a scope, and the  overall length is 43 1/2" without the brake. Magazine capacity is 4+1. This rifle is exceptionally well balanced, with responsive handling and pointing characteristics, and is easy to carry. The G. McMillan & Co. accuracy guarantee was "3 SHOTS, 1/2 INCH, 100 YDS" and this shooter certainly lives up to that standard.  The original factory test target will be included.

The rifle is in excellent, like new condition with a pristine bore, and I estimate it has been fired approximately 300 times. There is a small, virtually imperceptible, mark on the right side of the stock fore end, and a slight, almost invisible rub on the barrel.  Both are so minor they do not show well in the photos, and the entire package would be rated in 98% condition.

Also included with the rifle are Uncle Mike's NP3 finished 1" sling swivels ($20), the original instruction manual, original 1991 McMillan brochure, original 1991 McMillan Specifications and Pricing Sheet, and an October 1992 Peterson's Hunting article favorably reviewing this model.  The rifle was originally ordered with 1" low NP3 finished Burris Z rings, which will be included. Additionally, a set of 30mm high, NP3 finished Burris Z rings (pictured), and a set of 30mm medium, blued Conetrol rings and bases (not pictured) will be included.  The scope and rings shown are not included and are for visualization purposes only.

The current Blue Book value of this model in 98% condition is $1,950.00 for the standard base model rifle.  This valuation does not factor in the factory extras listed or the upgraded NP3 finishing, so the rifle is fairly priced for the consumer.

If you're interested in owning a rifle which is a cut above production quality, here is an opportunity to purchase a unique, high quality, dependable, virtually weather proof, hunting tool at a reasonable cost.

Shipping UPS ground within the US only is a flat $50.00.
