Description:
Remington Army New Model
Description:
Remington 1858 Army New Model Serial number 24719

Appendix C of Donald L. Ware’s “Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861 – 1888” estimates that this revolver was manufactured in May 1863

According to my reading of Ware and one other source, Army New Model revolvers were manufactured from about February 1863, starting with about serial number 12000, through March 1865, ending with about serial number 148,550, and about 132,000 were made. Prior to the New Model Army revolvers, Remington manufactured at least three Army model variations of Beals’ patent and about 8,000 to 10,000 of the Elliot patent model.  In December 1862, the Army informed Remington that the Elliot model was not acceptable and that all future revolvers had to be the Beals model. Remington rapidly complied. However, there was a transition period between December 1862 and into 1863, when excess Elliot model parts, including modified loading levers, were combined with Beals model parts for transitional revolvers.  This is NOT a transitional revolver.

Barrel address is correct and faint but clearly readable

                   PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858
E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A.
                           NEW MODEL
Cone front sight

Matching serial numbers on the bottom of the barrel, the frame inside the left grip, the bottom of the tab of the trigger guard, and the ratchet end of the cylinder.

There are military inspector markings (W) on the frame behind the trigger housing and on the left side of the frame behind the hammer.  There are also four box shaped ordnance markings on both sides of frame by the cylinder, the ram lever, and the cylinder.  There is also another ordnance marking on the bottom of the barrel forward of the ram lever latch.  Photos of all of the markings are provided.

Grips are good to very good with unreadable outline of oval cartouche on left grip

8 inch octagon barrel.  Bore has strong rifling with light pitting – on 1 to 10 scale, my opinion is 8.  Barrel threads are exposed by frame

New Model cylinder with safety notches between nipples

Ram leveris large, and the ram must be lowered to withdraw arbor pin

Hammer holds half cock and full cock, and the action is smooth, strong, locks up tightly and indexes properly

Nipples are very good to excellent and easy to remove, but they are all fouled and must be cleaned or replaced if you consider firing this weapon

This is an excellent Remington Army New Model that will enhance any collection and may be a good shooter, if properly inspected and certified for such use. I’m reluctant to let it go. Given the markings on this weapon, I suspect it has an interesting history.  If anyone recognizes the ordnance markings, please let me know where they’re from.

I truly enjoy collecting, examining, and discussing antique firearms, especially weapons from the civil and indian war periods.  It is my hope that the people I deal with share that joy.  I want the people who purchase my antique firearms to be pleased with their purchases and take pleasure in owning fine arms.
