Payment Types Accepted: USPS Money Order, Certified Cashiers (Bank) Check Description: Here is a truly "rare" find, a 3" Colt Police Positive Special with factory nickel finish and hammer shroud. The serial number (which groups both the Police Positive Special and Detective Special) dates production to 1960. The gun itself is at least 99% condition and shows no evidence of being fired. The grips are as new and numbered to the gun. The original box is in very good condition however there is no serial number on the underside. Also included is the bore brush, warranty card, and "Handling the Handgun" brochure. According to Colt literature, this configuration of the Police Positive Special was not available until 1962, and then removed from the catalog in 1963. In the nearly identical model Detective Special, the 3" barrel was available in 1961 and 1963, but not 1960 and 1962. The "mystery" deepens when you examine the included Colt Archive Letter. The serial number reads back as a Detective Special. My first thought was that the gun was a fraud but was later informed by the Colt Historical Department, "I know this situation well, as I have seen several of these (not nickel with hammer shroud, but 3” PP Specials). The invoicing explicitly states Detective Special. My guess – they were not concerned about the nomenclature at the time, and regardless of the barrel marking, at some point all were referred to in the invoicing as Detective Specials." I don't know how many examples of this "unicorn" may be out there, but it's one of the most unique Post-War DA revolvers I've had the opportunity of owning. You will likely never see another LNIB example offered for sale.
