BARGAIN BASEMENT PRICE!!! GOT TO GO!!!!! Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 carbine, this weapon is a wartime .52 caliber, rimfire, breechloading firearm designed by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Great entry level gun for a beginning collector or long time collector of Civil War carbines. You will not find a better priced Sharps and Hankins out there at this price period! A good quality original specimen of that the ‘Navy’ type carbine which had its barrel covered in a black leather covering as rust protection from the sea salt and air. This one has no leather cover. Around 7000 Navy carbines were produced by the Sharps and Hankins firm in Philadelphia, PA . The carbine was chambered for the No. 56 Sharps & Hankins metallic cartridge.
Fitted with six groove and land rifling, the weapon is 38 5/8” long and weighs about 8 pounds. By tripping the small finger release and operating the lever, the barrel slides forward to accommodate the Sharps rimfire cartridge. Weapon has a 23 5/8” long barrel with an iron blade front sight and a typical Civil War ‘tangent style’ rear graduated sight. Right side of the frame exhibits some of the the address (see pictures) “SHARPS & / HANKINS / PHILADA” and the left side frame has partial “SHARPS / PATENT / 1859” stampings (see pictures). Action works. Overall dark patina throughout the gun. Some light rust in the chamber and a couple of other areas. Easy fix. One screw replaced under the lever that opens the breech. Stock wood in excellent condition. This was the first US carbine ever with a safety, firing pin in the breech and an extractor. The safety on this carbine does not work that I can tell. This gun has a few small issues already mentioned but is priced accordingly and very fairly. Still has rifling in the bore also. SN 1126. Early production. I am a private CW collector.
