Description:
Remington Army New Model
Description:
Remington 1858 Army New Model Serial number 26156

Appendix C of Donald L. Ware’s “Remington Army and Navy Revolvers 1861 – 1888” estimates that this revolver was manufactured in June 1863

According to my reading of Ware and one other source, New Model Army revolvers were manufactured from about February 1863, starting with about serial number 12,000, through March 1865, ending with about serial number 148,550, and about 132,000 were made. Prior to the New Model Army revolvers, Remington manufactured at least three Army model variations of Beals’ patent and about 8,000 to 10,000 of the Elliot patent model.  In December 1862, the Army informed Remington that the Elliot model was not acceptable and that all future revolvers delivered to the US government must be the Beals model.  Remington rapidly complied.  However, there was a transition period between December 1862 and into 1863, when excess Beals and Elliot model parts were combined with New Model parts for transitional revolvers.

The revolver offered in this posting is not a transitional revolver.  This revolver is clearly a New Model Army with a gunsmith/blacksmith fabricated front sight and loading ram latch. It is not clear if the loading ram is a replacement, but it has a W military inspector marking.  The remainder of the revolver appears to be all New Model Army.

The barrel address on the posted revolver is a correct first variation for New Model Army revolvers - just two lines, citing the Beals patent date but without referencing Beals or the words New Model, and showing E. Remington & Sons (Ware pg 350). Ware on page 349 says this barrel address “. . . was in use for a short time and is found on army revolvers with serial numbers 10,000 to 20,000 . . .” In the 20,000 serial number range, the second variation of the barrel address on the New Model Army revolvers was used, which added the words NEW MODEL to the second line between the existing language and the frame.  This second variation lasted only a short while and was then changed to the third and final variation with the words New Model on a separate third line.  The third variation was use through the end of the Civil War. (Ware pg 349). See Ware pg 351 for examples of all of the Civil War Remington Army barrel addresses.

The barrel address on the posted revolver is clear and reads:

                PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858
E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A.

The serial numbers match on the bottom of the barrel, the frame inside the left grip, and the bottom of the tab of the trigger guard.  However, the serial number on the ratchet end of the cylinder is 2563.  Ware pg 355 explains that serial numbers on parts other than the three usual ones   “. . . indicates to me (Ware) that some hand fitting was required to make these parts function as they should, and the parts were marked to identify them to the revolver to which they were fitted.”  If this is true, the cylinder on the posted revolver was hand fitted for a different revolver. However, the hammer holds half cock and full cock, and the action is smooth, strong, locks up tightly and indexes properly.

There are military inspector markings, W & S, on the frame, barrel, loading ram, and cylinder.  There is a faint P inspector marking on the forward end of the trigger guard.  There is P on the ratchet end of the cylinder.

The grips are good but have no discernible oval cartouche on the left grip.  They appear to have been sanded and refinished in the distant past.

The posted revolver has an 8 inch octagon barrel.  The bore has strong rifling with light pitting – on a scale of 1 to 10, my opinion is 8/9.  The barrel threads are exposed by frame.

The New Model cylinder has safety notches between the nipples.

The nipples are very good to excellent and clear of obstacles.

This is a well used early version of the Remington New Model Army that someone cherished, as demonstrated by the repairs - fabricated front sight and loading arm latch - and the replacement cylinder.  It will enhance any collection.

I truly enjoy collecting, examining, and discussing antique firearms, especially weapons from the civil and indian war periods.  It is my hope that the people I deal with share that joy.  I want the people who purchase my antique firearms to be pleased with their purchases and take pleasure in owning fine arms.
