Description:
This was the first military handgun manufactured by a national armory. A total of approximately 4,100 were made, then serial numbered and issued in pairs. This gun has an iron clad provinance, as it was purchased directly from the family who's ancestor carried it in the War of 1812 and participated in the Battle of the Thames and the Battle of the River Raisen. Elijah Herndon was a member of the 4th Regiment of the Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia, under the overall command of General William Henry Harrison. On Oct. 5th, 1813 they defeated a combined force of British Regulars and Indians, and killed the famous Shawnee Chief, Tecumseh. The following year however, the American forces were routed by the British and the Indians at the River Raisen, and only twelve Kentuckians escaped to return home. This sidearm has never left Kentucky since that battle, and we have a signed affadavit from the family. It is listed and pictured in the recent book by Rick Hudak, "Harpers Ferry Arsenal". It is in excellent, original condition, with an even, dark brown patina, original wooden ramrod, and a faint "V" over "JS" inspectors cartouche on the stock. The markings are good and the lock is in perfect working condition. This is a great piece of American history.
