Description:

This Colt has matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap.  The gate number 766 also appears on underside of the frame.  The unusually-nice grips fit perfectly as absolutely original, with right side showing more wear to checkering.  The gun cocks crisply and locks up with incredible tightness, as if a new gun.  Both the safety and half cock notches are functional (not broken) and in the correct places, so hammer needs no re-building.  When hammer is drawn back slowly, the cylinder rotates until lock bolt pops into its lock notch.  Cylinder lock-up occurs simultaneously with gun coming to full cock.  It could not be better or tighter.

All markings are deep and clear, including the serial numbers, barrel address, patent dates, circled rampant Colt, “Colt Frontier Six Shooter” on side of barrel, and factory inspector marks.

This gun’s surfaces are gray to dark-gray overall.  There are hints of original blue on the upper backstrap behind the hammer.  The cylinder lock slots are sharp, with all cylinder panels being mostly smooth gray.  See picture of all six cylinder panel views.  The front of the cylinder is generally smooth, leaving a minimal gap between it and the rear of barrel.  The rear of this cylinder is smooth gray, and bears the “V” factory inspection mark.  Chambers are smooth and clean (pictures show oil inside).

The bore has strong lands and grooves, shiny with only the slightest even porosity.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would call this one an 9.8 bore condition.  The steel front sight remains in its original 0.52” x 0.29” tall configuration.  The ejector head is perfectly straight and fits nicely to the underside of barrel.  Amazingly no one beat up the bottom of the barrel in trying to pull the cylinder pin with a pair of plyers!  And thus the underside of barrel shows a smooth surface.  Likewise, the original cylinder pin head remains unmolested by plyers, with nice sharp concentric rings.  Under that cylinder pin is a tiny “44”, marked for bore size, which was a factory practice.

All screws in this gun are the originals, and each is way-above-average as for retaining sharp slots free of previous screw-driver damage.

The Colt Archives information from the shipping ledger confirms 44-40, 7-1/2", Blue, Rubber, & Shipped to Colt's San Francisco Agency on 2-19-1898, 10 Guns.  Keep in mind that the marketing area for San Francisco included California, Arizona, and Nevada

Being made/shipped in 1898, this Colt is classified as “Curio & Relic”, and can be mailed directly to the purchaser.  No FFL involved.
