1902 COLT 1877 LIGHTNING Double Action Revolver
First Colt Double Action Revolver in .38 Colt
Here we present a Colt 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver, made in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers. It was quite successful, selling 166,849 from 1877 through 1909, primarily in .38 and .41 calibers. Nonetheless, there was some hesitation to move away from the single action mechanism, which had so proven itself. Famous adopters of the Colt double action revolvers were William “Billy the Kid” Bonney and John Wesley Hardin, two legendary names of the American West.
The markings on this revolver include “COLT’S PT F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CT U.S.A.” on the top of the barrel. The left side of the frame has “PAT. SEPT 19,1871/PAT. SEPT. 5,1874/PAT. JAN. 19,1875”. The left side of the barrel has “COLT D. A. 38”. The hard rubber grips feature the rampant colt.
The overall condition is very good. The original blue finish is about 15%. Markings are clear. Serial numbers match. The hard rubber grips are in great shape. The bore is clean and sharp. The action is excellent.
