Description:
Manhattan – Series II .31 Caliber Serial Number 4411

Waldo Nutter’s “Manhattan Firearms”, Chapter IV discusses the Manhattan .31 Caliber Revolvers or Pocket Pistols.  Nutter concluded that between 3,600 and 3,800 were produced, beginning with serial numbers 900 and 1000 and ending between 4,500 and 4,800.  He further opined that the Series II .31 Caliber revolvers were produced after January 1860 and that production of the Series II “ . . . ceased not later than 1862.”

://baconfirearms/PocketII.htmlopines states “. . . that the actual range (of serial numbers) may be more like 1,050 to 4,500.  If that proves to be the case, less than 3,500 Series II Manhattan Pocket pistols were produced.”

The Series II .31 caliber revolver offered in this posting has serial number 4411, which puts it close to the end of the production – only about 90 revolvers of this type were produced by Manhattan after this one. The serial number matches at all four serial number locations for these revolvers - on the bottom of the barrel under the loading lever, the frame inside the left grip, the ratchet end of the cylinder, and the wedge.

The revolver has a six chamber cylinder.  The hammer is excellent and holds half and full cock.  The action is strong, locks tightly and indexes properly.

The barrel address is clear and reads:

MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS MF’G. CO. NEW YORK

The frame forward of the trigger guard clearly states:

  PATENTED
DEC. 27. 1859

The engravings on the cylinder, back strap, and frame are clear and easily readable.

The trigger guard is large, which is correct for this model.  However, the number 758 is stamped on the inside of trigger guard directly under the trigger.  I’ve never seen a number there before on any Manhattan revolver. It is clearly not the serial number.

The grips are excellent and large, which is correct for the model.

The octagonal barrel is four inches long.  It has the correct blade-type front sight made of German silver.  The bore has strong rifling with light pitting – on a scale of 1 to 10, my opinion is 9.

The cylinder has 12 notches.  The nipples are very good to excellent and clear of obstacles.  The chambers are in very good condition.

This revolver is an excellent example of a late Series II .31 caliber Manhattan revolver. It is clean and in excellent condition.   It will enhance any collection.

I truly enjoy collecting, researching, examining, and discussing antique firearms, especially weapons from the civil and indian war periods.  It is my hope that the people I deal with share that joy.  I want the people who purchase my antique firearms to be pleased with their purchases and take pleasure in owning fine arms.
