Description:
SALE PENDING! This is an early production Colt Model 1862 Pocket Police Percussion Revolver in 36 Caliber. Standard 4 1/2" Round barrel with half fluted cylinder. It basically offered the .36 Caliber firepower like the 1851 Colt Navy Belt Revolver in the size of the .31 Caliber Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver.  These were beautiful guns with a sleeker more streamlined appearance and production actually started a year earlier than its model designation.  The Serial number on this one is in the 7900 range which dates its production to late 1861 according to R.L. Wilson's book and the official Colt .  Another bit of history is that the 1862 was the last Percussion Revolver introduced by Colt and the last model the inventor Sam Colt would see go into production before his death at age 47 in early 1862.  While the Model 1862 would see production until 1873, this one was actually built during Sam Colt's lifetime as head of Colt...perhaps just a couple months before he passed away.  It's production also dates to the first year of the Civil War which resulted in strong demand for Colt's revolvers in both the North and the South.  Many were privately purchased by soldiers as their personal carry weapons in addition to their issued weapon.  While most 1862 Police Models were built after the beginningof hostilities in April 1861 and sold to the North, a few did make the journey South to the Confederates.  See last photo.

This one is in surprisingly nice condition for a first year production gun that lived during the time of the Civil War. The barrel still shows 50% original blue and 25% original blue on the cylinder (mostly in the flutes).  The frame shows 70% good discernable case colors.  Hammer and loading lever exhibit strong flashes of original case as well.  The trigger guard and backstrap have 80% of their original silver plating intact which is not commonly found as intact as this one on wartime production Colts.  The right side of the barrel and and areas of the frame show some spotty light corrosion...probably from resting in a leather holster for many years.  The original walnut grips are still orange in color with 95% original varnish.  Overall, they're in Fine Condition except for a few scratches and marks mostly on the right side.  Screws look good overall with many exhibiting strong original nitre blue.  Nice markings throughout with the Patent date on the Cylinder, "Colt's Patent" on left side of frame, "36 CAL" stamped neatly on the left side of the trigger guard, and a strong 1 line New York Barrel address.  The action still indexes and locks up.  Nice example with a lot of original finish remaining.
