Description:
The Model 24 was intended as a lower-cost alternative to the very expensive Model 23 shotgun, though compared to many double barrels available today, it is a far better choice. It comes with its own “leg-of-mutton” case (so named because of its similar shape). The case has worn out the stitching on the retention strap, which is common on old cases like these. It can of course be re-stitched and there are those out there who even specialize it such case repairs. The case has quite a bit of surface wear but that was always the intention – protecting the contents of the case came first, the condition of the case comes second. The Model 24 itself is in nearly perfect condition. It does have some bluing loss on the right side of the barrel. It is chambered for 16-gauge, 2 and ¾ “-shells. The barrels are 28 inches in length, with the right barrel having a modified choke and the left a full choke. The forend and stock are beautiful, and the latter has its original Winchester butt plate instead of a rubber addon, which is a common modification found on older guns. Having the original butt plate is better for collecting purposes however. The Model 24’s forend is wide which allows for a better grip than other doubles which are usually rather narrow. It has double triggers which is critical. Today, most will buy a single trigger double on the theory that less complexity means the gun is less likely to break down – but in fact the exact opposite is true. If the trigger system breaks on a single-trigger shotgun, the gun becomes a paperweight. On a double-trigger shotgun, if one trigger breaks, the user still has the other trigger and barrel available to them. I personally recommend double triggers for double-barrels for this reason. The Model 24 is very light which makes it perfect for long treks and quick tracking of targets. It would make a fine bird hunting gun.
