JAPANESE Marked Antique SNIDER-ENFIELD Rifle
From the Rapidly Modernizing Island Nation
Here we present an antique Japanese Snider-Enfield Breech-Loading Rifle, made circa 1870 in Japan. This was a period in which Japan was rapidly modernizing, taking many cues from Europe and the United States. After Commodore Perry famously sailed to Japan and forcefully ended Japan’s longstanding tradition of isolation, the island nation was especially keen to catch up to the world militarily. The Enfield P1853 Musket had been the British infantry weapon of choice before being modernized via the Snider Breech-Loading Conversion. Japan followed suit and set up domestic production of this venerable rifle.
This specimen is in very nice shape and features none of the typical British proof or maker’s marks. Instead, the right side of the barrel bears a line of Japanese characters. This rifle features a two-band configuration.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear a solid, dark patina. The markings are clear. The stock has been nicely refinished and remains smooth and solid. The bore is shiny with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a great example of a mid-19th Century Japanese Infantry Rifle!
