Description:
What we have here is a very old firearm. The 3rd model of the Type 2 was in production by Remington between 1888 and 1911. Its design is still used as the basis for many current-manufacture derringer pistols. It is chambered for the 41 Rimfire which was a powerful round for the period, given its application. Many derringers were also manufactured in 22 rimfire rounds so a cartridge firing a projectile nearly twice the diameter must have been something. Contrary to popular belief, gamblers, who are most often associated with the pistol, did not carry derringers in a sleeve or vest pocket, but instead carried them in their boot as it was easy to reach under the table and not be so obvious as to what they were doing. Derringers were also often used by ladies of the evening for obvious reasons. The Type 2 in the case is in fair to good condition. The barrels are 3 inches in length. The bores are not pitted, and the rifling is still visible – very unusual to find any old rimfire in this condition since rimfire cartridges back then were corrosive primed. The barrel release latch is a little too easy to operate. The left side hinge pin retainer has a crack in it. Since this pistol is not likely to be fired for lack of ammunition this is not really an issue. The grips are nearly intact if aged. Please see the pictures above. The Remington is serial number 901 or batch number 901.
