Description:
Ithaca Flues 12 Gauge Side-by-Side
GRADE 1, 99% FACTORY ORIGINAL MINT CONDITION, AMAZING FIND!

General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1914, 12 Gauge, 8lbs 8oz, SxS
Serial Number: 256728

The Ithaca Flues Model was produced from 1908 until 1925 when Ithaca came out with NID Model.  The Ithaca Flues was Ithaca’s most successful model, with the production of 250,000 double guns in that time period.  Keep in mind that Ithaca had the hammerless models called Crass, Lewis, and Minier Models that preceded the Flues Model (each Model being named after the inventor of the action), and then the NID that succeeded it being made until about 1949, so Ithaca made hammerless guns to the tune of almost 500,000 produced.  That is a lot more guns than Parker Brothers (250,000 total), or A.H. Fox (close to 200,00).  If you examined the catalogs of the time you would see that Ithaca charged about the same amount, grade for grade, as the other makers, yet they outsold them by a wide margin.  How did this happen?  Well, it seems to me that the buying public in the Golden days of the side x side thought the Ithaca a better gun and indeed, the Ithaca Flues Model has been taking game and breaking clays for over 100 years and most are still being shot today.  The Ithaca Flues Model was a delightful gun, with a super-fast lock time, reliable actions, and strong barrels.  Ithaca outshined the competition when it came to wood quality and checkering patterns comparing grade to grade.  This superb Ithaca Flues Grade 1 (their lowest engraved model), sn256728 made in 1914, could be the best example in existence, as it is virtually a 98% FACTORY ORIGINAL GUN IN EVERY WAY.  The only alteration to the gun is that someone along the way opened the chokes to Skeet/IC, making this a very versatile gun.  Normally I don’t get interested in the lower grade guns as I have opportunity to trade in “nicer stuff”, yet when I saw this gun I just had to have it.  The Twist Damascus barrels are superb inside and out, with perfect bores, 45 THOUSANDTHS MINIMUM WALL THICKNESS, and 99% factory original Damascus pattern showing.  They are tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun.  The action retains 99% bold, vivid, factory case color and clean, sharp engraving.  The wood is untouched factory original with not a chip, crack, or repair anywhere, retaining most of the factory finish and perfect, untouched checkering.  Mechanically the gun is 100%.  Just look at the wood to metal fit, the charcoal blue on the top lever and trigger guard, the brilliance of the case color…this is a very rare opportunity to own a very affordable example of what a new Ithaca looked like as it left the factory.  You just don’t see 103 year-old, lower grade guns in this kind of condition.  Best of all it has very shootable dimensions with 14 1/8” LOP and 2 5/8” drop at heel.  What a great gun to take afield or to bust some clay target games.  You will likely never see a better example of an Ithaca Flues Grade 1 in your lifetime.  Thanks for looking!
