General Specs: Fox, Year 1912, 20 Gauge, 5lbs 15oz, SxS Serial Number: 200029 Ansley H. Fox came out with what most believe to be the best proportioned 20ga. gun made in America late in 1912 when they announced the availability of their new 16 and 20 gauge guns, both made on a 20 gauge frame. The first full year of production was 1913 and the serial number range began at 200,000. The early A Grade pattern was a simple scroll pattern in English style. The first few hundred small bore graded Fox guns got early A style engraving, and then came William Gough in 1913 and changed it all to the more familiar deep vine and foliate Late A Grade engraving. This gun, sn200029 made in 1912 is one of a small handful of 20ga. A Grade Fox guns you will ever see with early A engraving. If you examine the engraving on this gun, it has more elaborate flourishe than most early A Grades, and it is indeed factory original, untouched engraving. THIS COULD BE THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS KIND OF DETAIL IN EXISTENCE. Most Fox enthusiasts are aware that the early guns seemed to be made with a little more care than the later guns, with smooth polished parts, a little nicer wood, and a better fit and finish in general than the later guns. You will notice these features on this gun, weighing 5lbs. 15oz. and balanced perfectly with its hard to find 30" Chromox #3wt barrels, nicely figured English walnut, and excellent checkering and wood to metal fit. THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN, meaning it has been stripped, cleaned, inspected, lubricated, and reassembled and carries a 90 day shooting warranty, ready for another several decades of use with no issues. We had the case colors redone by Doug Turnbull, the screws are perfect, and the gun has been fully restored. Everything is tight as new. For the Fox enthusiast finding an early A Grade small bore is a rare chance to add a fine little 20ga. to their collection. For the avid upland game chaser/target crusher that loves the romance of the vintage side by side, this is a nicely balanced, lightweight, well-made gun that will appreciate in value as you enjoy its use. Thanks for looking and don’t hesitate, as this is likely the only Fox 20ga. you will ever see with this engraving.
