Description: This is a very old firearm which is similar to the one used to assassinate Abraham Lincoln in 1865. The introduction of the percussion cap around 1820 allowed gun makers to replace the old flint lock ignition system with the far more reliable caplock type. This allowed muzzle-loading firearms to be fired in all types of weather so long as the powder was kept dry. It’s possible that a manufacturer’s mark is under the hammer, but we have not attempted to check whether this is the case or not. We believe this caplock is an original rather than a copy. It seems one or two screws were replaced at some point, which is unlikely to be the case for a replica. The pistol is in good condition considering its age. It has a barrel length of 2 and 3/8 inches long. The bore retains its rifling which is visible at the muzzle. The grooves are notably deep. The hammer is loose, but since the pistol is not likely to be fired in the future, this should not be a big issue. The design was originally produced by Henry derringer and it became commonly known as the Philadelphia Derringer after its place of origin. The design was widely copied by other manufacturers. The projectile used was normally .41-caliber. These were popular handguns for concealed carry in their day until being replaced by cartridge firearms such as the Remington Model 95, a design which gained the nickname of “derringer” which was subsequently applied to all similar single or two-barrel firearms used for pocket carry.
