Description:

FRENCH Antique Model 1822T Pistol by TULLE Armory

Made in 1822 As Flintlock, Converted Circa 1840

Here we present an antique French Model 1822 T Bis Percussion Conversion Pistol, made in 1822 at the Tulle Armory in France. This pistol was made for Marine troops aboard ships to board other vessels or repel boarders. These would have been used during the French Colonial period and would have been witness to the political turmoil that would be the French government in the middle of the 19th Century. Napoleon’s nephew Napoleon III would take the presidency of the Second Republic and then make himself emperor shortly thereafter.

This pistol was one of the earliest pistols, originally made in the flintlock format at Tulle and was subsequently updated to the percussion system at St. Etienne circa the 1840s. This pistol features many markings. The lock is marked “Mre. R./de Tulle”. The barrel tang is marked “Mle. 1822 T Bis. The right side of the barrel is dated “1822”. The left side of the barrel is marked “Cde176 A” over a faint date marking. Beneath these are the numbers “317” and “432”, both stricken and a new number “1004”. The same goes for the left side of the stock, renumbered “1004” and marked “ST ETIENNE”. The tulip ramrod is equipped with a powder measure and is numbered along with the rest of the gun “1004”. The iron trigger guard tang bears a partial anchor marking. Other small inspection and acceptance marks abound throughout. This is a fascinating study of how a French pistol was made in the age of flintlocks and how it was kept in use throughout the mid-to-late 19th Century.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have a light gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is clean with a plum patina and good rifling. The stock is in very good condition with honest wear and a short crack from the trigger guard tang to the brass pommel cap. The action on this pistol is excellent.
