This is a handsome, muzzle-loading pneumatic rifle, made ca. 1820, that has very slim and graceful proportions, similar to a small bore flintlock fowler. The barrel has a long under-rib with open, sporting type sights, and is unadorned except for a gold band inlay at the breech, and a gold-filled maker stamp: “FOTHERBY / WAKEFIELD" on top (John Fotherby: operated in Wakefield 1810-1830). The lock has fine line, geometric engraving with maker's name repeated in Gothic script. The walnut stock with short, wedge-fastened forend is in very good shape with some with-the-grain cracks running diagonally along the comb of the butt on the right side, and numerous small handling marks scattered about the wood. The rifle is fitted with a ball reservoir that screws into a fitting on the underside of the stock, just ahead of the trigger guard. The original ebony ramrod is included as well, and the action is fully functional, however the strength of the air seals on the reservoir and valve fitting is unknown, however the owner's notes reveal that the rifle was still used for target and pest control purposes until about the mid-1960s. It was purchased by John Anderson, late of the W.R. Yorkshire Constabulary, and twice a member of the Great Britain Police Shooting Team, having competed in the European Police Shooting Championships in 1960 and 1963. P.C. Anderson became a gun dealer after he retired, and bequeathed the rifle to the current owner. This is a splendid example of an early 19th century air rifle, and would make a great addition to any collection.
