Description:
Serial #C765, .451 Caliber, 36" barrel with a very good bore that has some dark freckling within the vertices. This is a handsome rifle that has retained traces of original blue on the barrel with the balance turned to a dark plum-brown patina with thin freckling along the top. An adjustable target front sight is fitted, as is a modified Whitworth reverse pattern rear ladder sight, and a stamped number has been added to the barrel breech on the right side just behind some old vise marks (“L2767"). The lock has a mottled gray patina with some spots of pinprick pitting, but the maker's markings are still crisp and clear, and a long range vernier sight is installed just below the tang. The walnut stock is in fine shape with sharp checkering and minor handling marks in the original oil finish. The rifle is equipped with a specialized trigger designed for use with a straight wrist, and the trigger guard has some traces of original blue remaining, as well as a legible “BEST" quality mark on the tang. A steel ramrod is included. This is a splendid example of a desirable Whitworth target rifle with an uncommon improvement, and rates fine condition overall. Antique
