J. Beattie & Co. Early Woodward Patent Snap Action, circa 1887, 20 bore, 5 lbs. 14 oz., made on the Thomas Woodward patent no. 651 (circa 1876) and commonly referred to at the time "Spiral Spring Woodward", original 28" damascus steel barrels showing original black powder proof and 1967 Birmingham reproof for 2 3/4" chambers and 3 1/4 TONS, 2 3/4" chambers, barrels choked .009 Lt. Mod and .018 IM, extractor, rib engraved "J. Beattie & Co.10 L Queen Victoria St. London", action with full sideplates border engraved and with maker's name in banner on both sides, forward bottom lever, pop-up cocking indicators on top tang, action water table stamped with patent mark, double triggers, English walnut stock with 15" LOP over a leather covered pad, 1 3/8" DAC, 2" DAH, 1/4" cast off, vacant oval, straight grip, splinter forend, forend stamped for W. Anson's Patent no. 10670 for push-button release. Very good condition scatter gun from the transition period of hammer guns to hammerless that produced so many interesting designs. Everything mechanically seems to be in good order, the damascus tubes are in good shape with good wall thickness at .027 on both, we can find only one small ding in the barrels, otherwise they look excellent, stock has a few handling marks and the rest of the iron seems good. All in all, pretty good condition for this old 131 year old girl. Small bores from this era are in short supply. She will make someone a nice light, small bore walking bird gun.
