The Luftschutz was a German volunteer civic service group during WW2 that functioned as a air protection warning service. Their primary duty was to warn German civilians of impending air raids. They were also responsible for analyzing communications about bomber formations, operating searchlights, and seeing that the air raid shelters were used in an orderly fashion. Members were required to buy their own helmets with the Luftschutz insignia on it and there were several styles to choose from. As WW2 dragged on all manner of obsolete and captured helmets were repurposed for the Luftschutz use. This particular helmet is a variation I have not been able to find in any book or online, but is certainly period original. It has the typical Luftschutz decal and is painted black instead of blue. What makes it very unique is that it has lugs typical of WW1 German helmets, but it is a lightweight helmet typical of civic service helmets. The liner is mostly gone except for the liner band and some of the leather covering and flaps. The Luftschutz member wrote his name in this helmet on both sides of the liner and it is still clearly legible on the leather sweatband covering. The man's last name was "Schroger". While the shape of this helmet mimics the M34 model helmet, it lacks the "salt shaker" vents, and what remains of the liner does not look like a M34 liner. This helmet would be an excellent addition to any German helmet collection and as far as we can tell, it may be one of a kind or a very scarce variation. SOLD |
