Description:

1870s Antique BALLARD No. 38 Rifle by Brown Mfg.

.38 Rimfire Falling Block Rifle

Here we present an antique Brown Manufacturing Company Ballard Patent Sporting Rifle, manufactured circa 1869 in Newburyport, Massachusetts.  This rifle was the continuation of the Ballard Rifle production and pre-Marlin Ballard. Brown Manufacturing Company only produced about 1,700 Ballard Rifles in different variations in their four years they manufactured the patent. Of those, only 700 were sporting arms and the other 1000 were military arms. This is the scarcer sporting arms manufactured variation chambered in .38 Rimfire. This rifle is one of the scarcer Ballard Patent rifles.

The left side of the frame is marked with “BALLARD’S PATENT/NOV. 5. 1861/BROWN MFG. CO. NEWBURYPORT. MASS”. The hammer is marked “PATENTED JAN.5.1869”. The top of the barrel has “No. 38” on it. There is a base for a tang sight still mounted to the frame. The manual ejector features a long spindle that threads in.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are covered with a smooth, dark patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is very nicely grained and shows minor handling marks. The bore is in fair condition with good rifling and clean surfaces aside from two small rings of especially caked on residue. This should clean up. The action on this rifle is strong. This rifle would have been a good hunting rifle especially as folks moved to settle the West in the late 19th Century.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 28 inches.

Caliber: .38 Long Rimfire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
