VERY RARE GRUDCHOS & EGGERS BEDFORD, MASS. BOMB LANCE HARPOON WHALE GUN CA. 1857. Patented in May, 1857 (U.S. Patent #17,370) by gunmakers Julius Grudchos and Selmar Eggers of New Bedford, Mass. for harpooning large whales in ice packs with an exploding lance-harpoon that would kill the whale before he could dive under ice and pull the whale boat with it. 34” o/a with 4 bore deeply rifled 18” sighted barrel. Weighs 16 lbs. Walnut stock and brass mounts. Large retaining ring at base of stock to secure it to the whale boat. Lock and top of barrel stamped “GRUDCHOS & EGGERS/N. BEDFORD, MASS.”. Very good with original blue-patina mix on metal and the original finish on the stock. Minus old period of use chips out of forend at the cap. Working order and excellent bore.
