Here we present an antique Black Powder Frame Colt Single Action Army Revolver Artillery Model (also known as the Springfield Armory Model), made in 1876 per the factory letter. The Colt Single Action Army is a worldwide icon of the United States of America and the Western Frontier and the Artillery Model is certainly one of the most interesting. It is characterized by having been issued as a U.S. Cavalry sidearm prior to about 1893, then returning to either the Colt factory or Springfield Armory to be serviced, parts exchanged, and the barrel shortened to keep it in service. This one comes with both a Colt Archive Letter for the original revolver, as well as a John A. Kopec Letter in which he painstakingly analyzes each part of this revolver in its present configuration.
Per the Colt Archive letter, the original revolver from which came our frame was shipped to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt plat on December 8, 1876. Kopec speculates with good reason that this revolver served with the 3rd Cavalry. Parts of this single revolver was inspected by Lewis Draper, Rinaldo A. Carr, Henry Nettleton, Captain Frank Heath, and probably O.W. Ainsworth. The rest of Kopec’s analysis may be read in the photo section.
The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame, underneath the cylinder, is marked “PAT.SEPT.19.1871/PAT.JULY.2.1872”. Underneath the frame there are the initials “L.D.” These are the markings of the inspector Lewis Draper who was an interim sub-inspector during the 1876 ordnance inspection period.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear an even gray patina. The markings are clear. The walnut grips are in good shape. The bore is fine, sharp and bright. The action is excellent. Here is a wonderful Artillery with a great amount of documentation!
