Description:

HIGH STANDARD Model “H-D MILITARY” Pistol in .22

6-3/4” Bull Barreled Exposed Hammer Pistol

Here we present a High Standard Model H-D Military Pistol, made circa the late-1940s in New Haven, Connecticut. This pistol was based on the High Standard HD model target pistol that was purchased by the U.S. government during World War II to train soldiers on a .22 Rimfire before introducing them to the standard .45 ACP. In 1942, the War Department ordered 34,000 Model H-Ds for the Army to use for basic pistol training. The large frame H-D gave the shooter a similar weight and controls as the 1911. The “H” in the model designation is for hammerless and the “D” was High Standard’s designation for barrel weight. After the war was over, it was a simple thing to keep making these pistols for the commercial market with desirable features such as a longer 6-3/4 inch barrel and adjustable rear sight. These became very popular for plinkers and Bullseye Target shooters.

The left side of the frame, above the trigger, is marked “MADE IN U.S.A./THE HIGH STANDARD MFG. CO./NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENT PENDING/.22 CAL/LONG RIFLE” over a likeness of the U.S. Ordnance flaming bomb mark. The left side of the slide is marked “HI-STANDARD/MODEL H-D MILITARY”.

The overall condition is very good. About 45% of the original blue finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is fine, shiny with good rifling. The walnut grips are in good condition. The action on this pistol is excellent. Here is a great example of a High Standard H-D Military!
