Scarce CIVIL WAR Antique Wm. UHLINGER Revolver

Very Interesting S&W Patent Infringement Presage to the SAA

Here we present an antique William Uhlinger Revolver in .32 Rimfire, made circa 1861 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. About 10,000 were made in three different variants. The Uhlinger Revolver was an interesting design because it utilized a single action mechanism, complete with a loading gate to load the metallic cartridges. This was in direct violation of the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent for the bored through cylinder. This revolver resembles the S&W No. 2 “Old Army” in size, chambering, operation and use of the sheathed trigger, however, it was improved by the solid frame. Uhlinger was obviously aware of this as he used several different aliases to mark his products or did not mark them at all to avoid being discovered. One can imagine that trying to avoid detection in this manner contributed to such a small number produced.

This specimen is one of those that left his manufactory with someone else’s name on it entirely. The right side of the 5-inch octagonal barrel is marked “D.D. CONE WASHINGTON D.C.” Curiously, Cone was not just an alias but a real person, a patent attorney in Washington D.C. who does not appear to have anything to do with Uhlinger. This revolver features handsome antique ivory grips.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a dark gray patina. The markings are legible. The serial numbers match. The antique ivory grips fit well and are in good shape. The separate ejector rod has been lost over time. The bore is in good condition, dark, clean and well rifled. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5 inches.
