Description:

The bottom picture is that of a Texas border guard as taken along the Mexican border in 1915.  He is holding a Win 1892 Rifle with 20" Barrel

The bore in this rifle is about excellent, with strong shiny lands, and scattered porosity mostly in grooves.  These sharp lands and grooves are very distinct at muzzle, with no rod wear or muzzle damage.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate this bore as an eight.  The bore was scrubbed clean with Colt 45 scrub pad slivers, as spiral-wrapped around a brass bristle brush.  Bore grease was applied afterward, to preserve this nice bore.

The octagon barrel measures just over 20”.  The magazine tube is attached at the proper distance from muzzle with a tubing hanger.  That hanger is secured to the underside of the barrel with what I call a “rotary dovetail”.  The hanger will not slide out left-to-right, but must be rotated 90 degrees for removal.  This keeps the magazine tube securely centered on the bottom octagon flat.  Although the tube installation is not factory work, this shortened rifle was reconfigured as a “border rifle” by a quality gunsmith or machine shop.  The short rifle was popular with many users, as it combined the shorter overall (carbine) length with a heavier rifle barrel and superior sights.  Because of known extensive use on Mexican border ranches, these are sometimes called "Border Rifles" or "Border Carbines".  Compared to standard production rifles, a relative few were manufactured at Winchester with 20” barrels and full magazines.

The barrel is equipped with a “rocky mountain” type front sight (German silver blade) and a standard long leaf rear sight.  The rear sight elevator is stamped “Pat. Feb. 5, 1901”.  Ahead of this rear sight is a sharp two-line Winchester address, and near the frame is “38 W.C.F.”.  The barrel retains 15% original blue, fading to a pleasing smooth gray.  Unlike many octagon barrels that saw extended use, the flats and corners are amazingly free of notable dings and scratches.  The magazine tube also shows generous traces of original blue, with the balance being smooth gray.

The action functions crisply as it should, and the hammer safety notch is not broken.  The upper tang is deeply stamped “Model 1892 / Winchester / Pat. Oct. 14, 1884”.  The forward lower frame is stamped with the serial number, 223897.  Original Winchester fire blue remains around the receiver screws, top of frame, and bolt.

The walnut stocks are generally smooth, with the expected nicks and scratches from normal use.  No chips, cracks, or repairs to wood.  Behind the upper tang are some shallow shrinkage cracks from the wood curing, but these have no depth.  The wood stocks are even or proud to the adjacent metal surfaces, and were never sanded.  The close wood-to-metal fits are representative of the high-quality work done by the early Winchester shops.  The foreend remains to full original dimensions, with no wood loss on the bottom from “riding” on top of a saddle.

Overall this is a better-than-average Winchester M1892 Rifle, with the desirable 20” barrel/full magazine, and a high condition bore!!

I can ship this rifle directly to a buyer with C&R license, or to his FFL dealer, unless your State has exceeded normal Federal guidelines.
