Description:
This rifle is unique. It was originally produced by Mauser and imported into the U.S. prior to 1968, hence there are no import markings. The rifle was later taken to a local, well-known gunsmith by the name of Carl Stover located in Soddy Daisy, Tennessee. He customized it, replacing the original barrel with a blued, 26” long barrel chambered for the 264 Winchester Magnum. His first initial and last name are on the barrel. The stock was bedded, and the original safety was replaced by a Buehler safety. Buehler produced aftermarket two-position safeties, among other things, for rifles mounting scopes so the shooter could operate the safety without having to use extravagant and expensive scope mountings that placed the scope high up enough for the original safety to be used. The trigger was also likely modified, as it is far superior to the average trigger one encounters on a bolt action rifle. The bore is in wonderful shape, though there appears to be some micro-pitting at the tip of the muzzle. The proper application of J-B compound would fix this of course. I have had great success with it in my personal Mauser rifles. There is some bluing loss and minor pitting on the top of the barrel. Please see the pictures above. The stock is in excellent condition for its age and shows no signs of cracks. It does have some minor dings as with most older rifle stocks. Strangely, the front and rear lock screws are absent, though the trigger guard screws are of course present. The lock screws would not be difficult to replace. The scope rings and bases are Redfield Leupold-style examples judging by the “R” symbol on the forward base. The scope is a simple Micro-Trac with 3-9x40mm magnification. Overall this is a very nice and likely very accurate rifle. The .264 Winchester Magnum was officially announced by Winchester in 1958 and is one of a series of cartridges based on Winchester’s own .458 Win Mag case necked down. It has historical significance as it is the first American 6.5mm cartridge since the long defunct .256 Newton (which was actually .264” in diameter, not .256”) was announced back in 1913. The .264 Win Mag is a fine ultra-velocity round with the original factory load propelling a 140-grain bullet to a little over 3000 fps. It possesses exceptional long-range capabilities and ballistics superior to the classic .270 Winchester. It is very much an open plains and mountain cartridge. The hand loader has a wide choice of bullets available to them ranging from 85 grains up to the famous 160-grain projectile. As a general rule, the 100-grain projectiles are intended for deer and antelope, while the 140-grain ones are intended for elk and larger game. The 160-grain projectiles are intended for heavy game such as moose. Outside of hunting where quick follow-up shots may be required, care must be taken to allow for proper cooling of the barrel as the .264 Win Mag can be hard on the barrel. Its performance and wide range of applications certainly outweigh this.
