Description:
Major-General Pattillo's Smith & Wesson Victory Model Revolvers -

A) Serial no. V662005, .38 S&W cal., 5 inch round bbl., blue finish, ivory grips. B) Serial no. V677071, .38 S&W cal., 5 inch round bbl., blue finish, ivory grips. A pair of Smith & Wesson U.S. inspected Victory Model revolvers owned by fighter Ace Cuthbert A. "Bill" Pattillo. Bill Pattillo and his brother Charles were the only twins to serve as fighter pilots in the 8th Air Force in WWII. Both brothers served in the 352nd Fighter Group, both were credited with destruction of five or more German aircraft and both eventually became Generals. Bill Pattillo destroyed a Me-262 jet fighter on April 10, 1945. On April 16 he destroyed six aircraft while strafing an airfield. During this attack, his P-51 was hit by ground fire and he crash-landed and was captured. After liberation, Bill Pattillo remained in the Air Force. He and his brother Buck founded the famous Air Force "Thunderbirds." Bill Pattillo commanded the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing during the Vietnam War and flew 236 combat missions. He retired as a Major General in 1980. His major awards include: the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal with eleven Oak Leaf Clusters. Both of the revolvers have been re-blued and fitted with ivory grips. The left side of the top strap of both revolvers is stamped with an Ordnance Bomb followed by "U.S. Property G.H.D." The hammers and triggers are case-hardened and the revolvers have the original lanyard loops. The revolvers are complete with a pair of russet leather shoulder holsters. The light-weight leather holsters are marked: "F. STEININGER/PLZER" near the top of the holster. A unique pair of matched pistols owned by a highly decorated veteran of air combat in two wars. CONDITION: Excellent as refinished. Both revolvers retain nearly all of the re-blued finish. Revolver no. V662005 has some patches of light pitting on the left side of the barrel near the muzzle. The markings on both revolvers are light. The ivory grips have shrunk slightly, the grips on both revolvers have some minor hair-line cracks near the screw holes. No. 677071 has a hairline crack on the left side of the grip that extends approximately one-inch in either direction from the screw hole. The case hardened triggers and hammers have nearly all the case colors intact. The bores on both revolvers are excellent. The actions are crisp and tight. Both holsters are in nearly new condition with only some minor scuffing on the belt tie-down loops.
