Description:

CIVIL WAR-Era Antique ELI WHITNEY Pocket Revolver

Fine Example of a Scarce Whitney Made Circa 1860

Here we present an antique Eli Whitney Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1860 in Whitneyville, Connecticut. Eli Whitney established his Whitneyville Armory 1798 and produced firearms by contract for the young U.S. government among other things. Just prior to this, in 1793, Whitney invented the mechanical cotton gin, which dramatically changed the economic landscape in the U.S., namely in the South. Eli Whitney died in 1825, and his son, Eli Whitney Jr., took up the mantle of running the family business in 1841. Whitney Jr. seized the opportunity in 1847 to manufacture 1,000 of Samuel Colt’s latest revolver the Colt Walker revolver. Production of this revolver helped both parties immensely as it kept Colt in business and it allowed Whitney Jr. to tool up and gain experience making revolvers. Whitney would go on to make small arms for the Union during the American Civil War.

This specimen would have been intended for the civilian or law enforcement market in the mid-19th Century. It was small enough to be unobtrusive for carrying while still being big enough to fight with. This is a second model equipped with a loading lever with a ball style of retention under the barrel. The top of the barrel is marked “E. WHITNEY/N. HAVEN”.

The overall condition is fine. About 60% of the blue finish remains. The markings are legible. The bore is sharp and bright. The original walnut grips are in fine condition, showing very little wear. The cylinder pin retention screw is absent. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a sharp and scarce little Whitney Pocket Revolver from the Civil War period!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 5 inches.

Caliber: .31 Percussion
