Description:

RARE Gustave Young Engrave COLT 1851 NAVY Revolver

ENGRAVED w EAGLE Carved Grips Made 1856

Here we present an antique Colt 1851 Navy Revolver, made in 1856. This 1851 Navy Revolver was factory engraved by the famous and trend-setting master engraver Gustave Young. Gustave Young was one of many German immigrants who came to the United States and worked in the firearms industry. However, Young’s talents were most assuredly in engraving and his style set him apart from his contemporaries. This influx of German engravers starting in about 1850 was perhaps the beginning of what R.L. Wilson has called the “golden age of arms engraving in America”. Other names such as Bodenstein, Helfricht, Nimschke, and several Ulrichs would also make their enormous contributions to the craft, imparting their Germanic influence and become legends as well. Wilson goes on to say that “Young is generally considered to have been the best arms engraver active in 19th Century America.” Young was “Colt’s chief engraving contractor from 1852-1869.”

This revolver features handsome, eagle-carved grips. The metal is gorgeously engraved by Gustave Young with 80% coverage. The engraving is characterized by Young’s use of a wolf’s head on each side of the hammer as well as his broad floral scroll. Another trademark of his was another animal’s head on the barrel lug, which this one has. The cylinder roll engraving on the 1851 Navy features a scene from the Battle of Campeche executed by American engraver Waterman Ormsby. The engraving pays homage to Texas in their fight with the Mexican government for independence. During this particular battle, the Mexican Navy wielded two ironclad steamers, while the Texans were armed with a variety of wooden ships, led by Commodore Edwin Moore. The scene also appears on the cylinders of the Colt 1860 Army and 1861 Navy Revolvers.

This specimen is in very good condition. This may have been made as a work of art, but it certainly appears to have been used as a weapon during the American Civil War. It has seen some weathering, but the engraving is still there. Markings are clear and legible. The cylinder scene is still visible. Serial numbers match (sans wedge) and each has a punch dot underneath denoting a revolver that was earmarked for engraving at the factory. The grips are very attractive, but do not appear factory original. Bore is very good, with strong rifling. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .36 percussion

The bore is in good condition, and the firing mechanism is excellent.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Here is a fantastic, investment-worthy, Civil War era piece of art produced by Colt & Gustave Young.
