Description:
This is a nice customized Mauser rifle. It is based on the Model 98 receiver. This gives it great strength thanks to both the action’s design, and the high quality of German metallurgy. The Model 98, which is short for Model of 1898, was the result of a series of rifle designs going all the way back to the Mauser Model of 1889 (not to be confused with the Commission Model of 1888). These designs, invented by Paul Mauser, followed a simple progression of simple improvements made between each design. The line began with the Model of 1889, and went on to the 1890, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’94, ’95, ’96, and finally the ’98. Many of these designs were actually sold to foreign nations (because the German Army was using the Commission Model 1888), and the feedback gained from them and their use of the rifles was used as the basis for the improvements featured in the next model. The ’98 featured the introduction of a larger diameter receiver ring (1.41” as opposed to the earlier 1.3”) and the addition of a third, rearward locking lug to ensure the safety of the shooter in the event of one or more of the forward lugs failing. The design also featured better emergency gas venting arrangements. The ’98 became the most successful of all Mauser rifles and many of its features can be found on modern rifles, particularly the CZ 550 and Ruger M77 Mk II. The rifle above, like many customized ‘98s, has been restocked and re-barreled to a caliber more familiar to the U.S. shooter, the .308 Winchester. This is one of the most popular rounds on the market today and is very comparable in performance to the original 8x57mm Mauser. It is produced by nearly any manufacturer and there is a vast supply of reloading equipment available to load one’s own ammunition. The new stock is quite beautiful although it does show signs of use. It features a high-gloss finish. The scope is an old, but still useful Redfield. The original safety was replaced by a Buehler safety. Buehler produced aftermarket two-position safeties, among other things, for rifles mounting scopes so the shooter could operate the safety without having to use extravagant and expensive scope mountings that placed the scope high up enough for the original safety to be used. Naturally, as with any military Model 98, the parts do not have matching serial numbers and the German Army sent back rifles for disassembly, cleaning, refitting, and reassembly as this is standard procedure for virtually any military. The rifles are disassembled into individual parts which are sorted into buckets by part type, i.e. buckets of receivers, buckets of barrels, buckets of magazine wells, buckets of trigger parts, etc. The best parts are picked and reassembled into rifles and shipped back out immediately. The next best parts, which exhibit moderate usage, are refitted if possible, reassembled into rifles and sent out. The parts that are well worn and beyond the possibility of refitting are simply discarded. Hence many rifles such as the M98, the M1 Garand, the M1 Carbine, the Lee-Enfield, and the Mosin-Nagant will have examples with multiple serial numbers. That is why rifles with matching serial numbers bring a premium in value over mixed serial rifles – they have seen little use and were never sent back to an arsenal.
