FINE Antique REMINGTON New Model ARMY Conversion

Martially Marked .45 Centerfire Fluted Conversion

Here we present an antique Martially Marked Remington New Model Army .45 Centerfire Conversion Revolver, originally made circa 1870 in Ilion, New York. The Remington New Model Army represent the second-most number of issued handguns found on Civil War battlefields, second only to the Colt 1860 Army. The Remington featured a strong, solid-frame design with the groove in the top for a rear sight, as opposed to Colt’s open-top design. Though Colt got the lion’s share of the government contracts, many consider the Remington New Model Army the superior firearm. The Remington New Model Army continued in service with the U.S. Army and in the hands of civilians well after the war. Some, like this one, were given new life when they were converted to handle more modern cartridges.

This specimen was expertly converted to .45 Colt, likely in the 1870s. It features a fluted cylinder and a dovetailed blade front sight. This conversion did not include a loading gate & ejector like the factory Remington conversion, instead relying on the ability to quickly remove the cylinder to reload (a design feature making this a very desirable revolver in the percussion days) and perhaps even having a loaded back-up cylinder. The top of the barrel is marked “PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858/REMINGTON & SONS/ILLION, NEW YORK, U.S.A./NEW-MODEL”. The left grip has the inspection mark “G.P.” for Giles Porter who was a government inspector for Remington New Model from 1862-1875. Other single letter inspection marks found throughout. A very neat conversion!

The overall condition is near fine. About 20% of the original high polish blue finish remains with a soft gray patina making up the balance. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The original grips are in good condition with some bruising on the right panel. Cartouche is clear. The bore is very fine, sharp and bright. The action on this revolver is excellent, glassy smooth. Here is a very scarce example of a Remington New Model Army with a handsome and very practical conversion to .45 Colt!
