CIVIL WAR 5TH PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY OFFICER’S INSCRIBED WHITNEY NAVY REVOLVER CA. 1863. .36 cal. six shot 7 ½” octagon revolver with U.S. Govt. inspection marks and professionally (probably factory done) engraved on the back strap “Julius D. Flurer”. 100% original in every respect. Flurer who was from Philadelphia was recruited as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Pa. Cavalry at Philadelphia on July 30, 1861. Was promoted to 1st. Lt. Feb. 16, 1862 and mustered out Dec. 10, 1864 having served for most of the war with one of the most engaged Cavalry units in the Union Army. They served mostly in Virginia and in North Carolina right thru to Appomattox Court House and the Lee’s Surrender. Lt. Flurer served almost the entire time up until the Mechanicsville when the 5th Pa. was badly shot up and the Regiment was reorganized after. He apparently suffered from infirmities as a result of the long service and his pension record lists him as an invalid in 1869 and his date of death as May 13, 1875. The revolver itself is in very good to fine original condition with the original patina and excellent markings including all the U.S. Sub-inspector’s “B” stampings on the major parts. Walnut grips with the original finish. Working order and good bore and chambers. With 5th Pennsylvania Regimental history and copies of Flurer’s pension file and death certificate. Of special note the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment was one of the few Union Cavalry units armed with Whitney Revolvers.
