Description:

RARE CIVIL WAR Allen & Wheelock Navy LIPFIRE

1 of Only 500 Navy Lipfire Revolvers Produced

Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Navy Lipfire Revolver, made in Worcester, Massachusetts, circa 1861. Only 500 of these revolvers were made before the line was ended. Like many inventors and firearms makers of this period, Allen & Wheelock had infringed on the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent for bored through cylinder chambers, allowing their revolvers to use metallic cartridges. Instead of the cartridge being rimfire or pinfire, A&W used “lipfire”, which was patented by Ethan Allen himself. This cartridge had a straight case with a small “lip” or rim hanging off one side of the rearmost edge of the case. This cartridge does remind one of a hybrid between rimfire and pinfire.

The loading gate on this revolver hinges downward and has a pull-type latch. A very interesting feature of this revolver is the ejector, which operates on a hinge. The front of the trigger guard is the operator’s handle for the ejector, and this latches into the rear of the trigger guard.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a dark, aged patina. Some of the markings are still legible. The right grip is quite intact, while the left grip is a bit worn and cracked. The bore is well-rifled and in good condition. The action is very nice and smooth. Here is a seldom seen and very interesting Civil War Revolver!
