Description:

1902 ARIZONA TERRITORY SHIPPED Colt Bisley SAA

Sent to Prominent Prescott Citizen Per Factory Archive Letter

Here we present a Colt Bisley Single Action Army Revolver, made in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. The factory letter that accompanies this revolver states that this revolver was shipped by itself to Samuel Hill of Prescott, Territory of Arizona on December 6, 1902. Arizona was made a state in 1912. Much can be gleaned about Sam Hill from his obituaries. According to the Arizona Republican, Hill “left England in 1863 and went to Oregon in 1865. He was a trooper in the United States Cavalry and was afterward clerk of the quartermaster's department at San Francisco. He was clerk of the quartermaster's department at Fort McDowell in 1875 under Captain McGregor, General Crook, commanding. He was afterward chief clerk of the quartermaster's department at Fort Whipple under Captain Simpson, General Kautz commanding.” He ventured into several other areas of business before starting what would become Samuel Hill Hardware Company in 1877. The Prescott Evening Courier states “It can be said that he was strictly a self-made man. From a small beginning he built up one of the most considerable hardware businesses in Arizona.” Samuel Hill died suddenly in late 1901 while visiting Paso Robles, California. The business went on to prosper and was managed by the family for the next 65 years.

This specimen features a Colt Archive Letter. The letter states that this revolver was originally chambered in .41 Colt with a 4-3/4 inch barrel and a blue finish. This revolver has been re-barreled with a 5-1/2 inch Christy Gun Works barrel, a product of the famous Sacramento, California custom gun shop. This shop was the one that legendary shooters and writers like Elmer Keith and Skeeter Skelton went to get their revolvers customized. This revolver is now chambered in the much more widely available .38 Special (invented 1898), the parent cartridge of the .357 Magnum of Keith fame. The metal surfaces have been nickel plated.

The overall condition is fine. The nickel finish is about 90%. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers on the butt, trigger guard and frame all match. The hard rubber grips are sharply checkered and bear the rampant colt. The bore is in very good shape, with well-rifled and clean. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice Colt Bisley SAA Revolver that went to the Arizona Territory before being customized by some of the best in the business.
