Description:

“FISHER” & “PARKER” Marked Antique Long Rifle

Large Bore .52 Caliber w “Henry Parker” Lock

Here we present an antique Back-Action, Full-Stock Long Rifle, made circa 1840. The lock is marked “Henry Parker” and the barrel “_.B. FISHER”.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This .52 caliber rifle is finely decorated with brass hardware. The patch box features a daisy head motif, while the other side of the stock bears a placard in the shape of a crescent moon. The lock is marked “HENRY PARKER/WARRANTED” in gothic script. There is a brass placard on the bottom of the wrist that is stamped, probably with a name, but only the last two letters are clearly legible: “______ED”. The barrel is marked at least three times with the name “_.B. FISHER”, and this name also appears on the bolster opposite the lock. There was once a William B. Fisher who built long rifles out of Lynchburg, Virginia. The stock is striped maple. It also features double set triggers.

The condition is that of a relic. Like many of its kind, this rifle will be an example of a kind of art from early America. The iron is dark with age. The markings are largely legible. The wood grain is attractive and this is a great gun, despite the repair. The fact is that this artwork once served a vital role for someone over 150 years ago. The action is functional with no half-cock.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Here is a very interesting and beautiful long rifle at a great price!

Barrel is 36-5/8 inches in length.
