Description:

WHITNEY Marked CIVIL WAR Springfield Rifle-Musket

Primary Infantry Weapon of the American Civil War

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Type I Rifle-Musket, made in 1863 at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. The M1863 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1863 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike solid round ball.

This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is marked “1863” and “U.S. Springfield” with a federal eagle on the lock plate and the bolster. The breech of the barrel is also marked “1863”. The breech of the barrel is proof marked “V/P/Eagle head”. The stock is uniquely marked with an eagle and “Whitney Arms Co.” stamp. These markings are very scarce. The stock opposite the lock still retains its two original government inspector cartouches, which are very sharp and clear. “ESA” is for Erskine S. Allin (the Master Armorer soon to be inventor of the trapdoor conversion of these muskets), and the other is “WJJ”, which to date have not been identified. Three initials are also present stamped behind the trigger guard tang, which appear to be “E.H.G.”

Overall condition is very good. The iron parts are very dark and untouched. The markings, especially the cartouches, are exceptionally clear and legible. The walnut stock is near fine. The bore is clearly rifled. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Here is a very nice example of an original Civil War rifle-musket that was used by the Everyman infantry soldier to fight for the Union.

Barrel is 40 inches in length.

Caliber: .58 percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
