This variant of the Luger Pistol is notable for its “S/42” code, which was a secret designation for the Mauser company, which made it. This was done after the brutal Treaty of Versailles put stringent limits on Germany’s military, as well as their arms manufacturing. Other codes were applied to other makers as well to obscure the source of their products. Date codes were initially used during the first few years of illicit production, but were done away with as the budding Nazi government grew bolder. With the world’s eyes diverted, Germany rearmed itself and prepared for the next World War. This specimen is marked “1937” on the chamber and “S/42” on the toggle. German military acceptance and proof marks are located on the right side of the frame. The barrel is proof marked. Each of the parts, internal and external, are serialized. The finish is an example of the “late 1937 finish”, which featured blued controls instead of the previous straw coloring. Georg Luger was the inventor and the namesake of this very successful pistol. His design would be especially successful throughout World War I & World War II. These pistols had and still have a reputation of being of utter quality and quite expensive to produce. The overall condition is excellent. The blue finish is about 85%. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match, including the grips, but excluding the unnumbered magazine with plastic base. The grips are in very good condition. The bore features strong rifling and shiny surfaces. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice example of a Nazi German Luger made before the fighting of World War II began. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 4 inches.
