BELGIAN Antique Perc. to Pinfire CONVERSION Pistol
Nicely Engraved Mid-19th Century Pocket Pistol
Here we present an antique Engraved Belgian Single Shot Percussion Pistol, Converted to Pinfire, originally made circa 1840 in Liege, Belgium, and converted circa the 1860s. This pistol was made with self-defense in mind and was very similar to Henry Deringer’s famous pistols in the United States. When firearms technology had firmly established that metallic cartridges were here to stay the owner had their obsolescent percussion pistol converted to handle pinfire cartridges, which were very popular in Europe throughout the 19th Century.
Along with beautiful engravings, this pistol is marked “CORD BREVETE” on the left side of the frame. This is likely the patent marking for the conversion. A faint Liege proof mark is visible on the barrel. This conversion was accomplished by plugging the breech and cutting a hole for the firing pin protruding from the cartridge. The hammer has been replaced with one with a simple flat striker.
The overall condition is very good. The finish is bright. The hammer retains nice case coloring. The engraving is sharp. The walnut grip shows some use and remains in great shape. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is strong. Here is an interesting little pocket pistol from 19th Century Europe!
