Description:

1850s Engraved FRENCH Gastinne-Renette Pistol

Parisian Single Shot Self-Defense Weapon

Here we present an antique Single Shot Percussion Pistol, Made by Gastinne-Renette of Paris, France circa the 1850s, during the Second French Empire under Napoleon III. The company was named for its partners Albert Renette and Louis Gastinne who called themselves “arquebusiers to the Emperor” as it states on the barrel of this pistol. These were not simply gunsmiths but artisans capable of the most ornately decorated firearms in all of France. Their shop on Champs-Élysées was a destination for the royalty and well to do of France as well as foreign countries. Renette traces his arquebusier roots back to before the French Revolution of 1789. In 1834, Louis’s son Jules married Albert’s daughter Josephine, further solidifying the partnership. Not only was the shop notable for its fine firearms, it was also a place where one could purchase or rent pistols and get a little training or practice in before a duel. According to one account, the owner of the famous and acclaimed Ledoyen Restaurant not far away from Gastinne Renette knew that they were about to receive well-heeled patrons when they saw carriages full of gentlemen heading for the greens where duels frequently took place as afterwards, the offended parties sat down to reconcile over food and drink.

This pistol is relatively small as it was intended for the self-defense of the gentleman that purchased it. Though it would spend most of the time in a pocket, the maker did not neglect to handsomely engrave this pistol’s lock, barrel, pommel and trigger with ivy and carve the stock. The shape of the pistol grip lends itself very well to easy pointing and balance, and the distance to the trigger is just right. The trigger folds into the stock of the gun until the hammer is cocked, a very effective way to streamline the pistol for a pocket. The top of the barrel is marked “Gastinne Renette Arq. de l Emereur a Paris”.

The overall condition is good. The iron surfaces are uniformly dark with age. The markings are clear. The engraving is in good shape. The walnut stock is in good shape with a short, stable split from the wedge to the fore end. The cup of the hammer is partially chipped. The bore is sharp and clean, rifling is 12-groove. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice “Deringer” type pistol from some of the most renowned makers in France!
